1987

  • September 20—Testified at the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Health & Environment of the Committee on Energy & Commerce arguing that the definition of AIDS should include HIV and eqrly diagnosis should be embraced by the medical/public health community
  • October 7– Americans for a Sound AIDS Policy (ASAP) incorporated
  • November 15-18—Co-sponsored and managed the first National Conference on HIV with Harvard Medical School, University of Oklahoma Department of Family Practice, Brigham & Women’s Hospital; Walter Reed Army Institute of Research; and the University of Miami School of Medicine in Washington DC

1988

  • One of 11 national organizations to receive the first grants from the Centers for Disease Control under the “America Responds to AIDS” Campaign
  • March 2—Testified at the President’s Commission on the HIV Epidemic highlighting the key roles of education and prevention in Washington DC
  • July 14-17—Co-sponsored and managed second National Conference on HIV with the American Red Cross, the US Department of Health & Human Services, and Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington DC
    Launched four-year investment seminar series presenting companies working on HIV diagnostic tools, treatments, vaccines and vaccine therapies to professional investors in the US and Europe
    Launched the ASAP Children’s Assistance Fund to serve HIV infected and affected children and families

1989

  • April 6—Testified at the Food & Drug Administration on home HIV test kits
  • April 24-26—Co-sponsored and managed the third National Conference with CDC, Home Office Reference Labs and ICN Pharmaceuticals in Washington DC
  • April 26-27–Hosted faith-based working group with CDC and published “The Church’s Response to the Challenge of AIDS: A Guideline for Education and Policy Development” with MAP International, Washington DC

1990

  • November 30-December 1—Co-sponsored and managed fourth National Conference on HIV/AIDS focused on the faith community and World AIDS Day Concert, Atlanta GA
  • Published first ever directory of US government spending on HIV including information on how local non-profit and advocacy organizations could access it
  • Expert witness at CDC hearing on expanding the case definition of AIDS so more women could receive assistance

1991

  • April 16—Testified at the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Health & Environment of the Committee on Energy & Commerce again trying to redirect the focus to HIV, not AIDS
  • Worked with Kimberly Bergalis and the other 7 known individuals who had contracted HIV from the Florida Dentist on a Congressional hearing, meeting with US government health experts and private sector medical experts
  • Named to CDC’s Ad Hoc Committee on HIV and STDs
  • Published book “Christians in the Age of AIDS”

1992

  • Feb 24—Testified at the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Health & the Environment of the Committee on Energy & Commerce supporting early diagnosis of HIV and support of treatment programs for people infected with HIV
  • May 26—FDA approval of SUDS HIV-1 Antibody Rapid Test by International Murex Technologies with whom ASAP worked
  • December 13—Testified at the Food & Drug Administration Hearing on the OraSure oral fluid collection device

1993

  • Testified before legislative committees in California, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, Montana, New Hampshire and North Carolina on implementation of various HIV related laws
  • Worked with the American Medical Association delegations to ratify official AMA policy positions supporting early diagnosis of HIV and partner notification

1994

  • Jan 21-22—Sponsored African American Leadership Forum on HIV/AIDS (for physicians)
  • February—Speaker at Alaska Legislators Children’s Caucus
  • September 16—Testified at and helped shape the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Human Resources and Intergovernmental Relations hearing on HIV/AIDS in the African American Community
  • December—FDA approval of OraSure, oral fluid HIV test by Epitope, Inc with whom ASAP had worked

1995

  • May 11—Testified at House of Representatives Subcommittee on Health & Environment of the Committee on Energy & Commerce regarding Baby AIDS

1996

  • May 9—Testified at National Conference of State Legislators on the role of sterile syringes in HIV prevention
  • October 17—Testified at first CDC Working Group on Partner Notification

1997

  • October 7—Organization name changed to Children’s AIDS Fund
  • Published Abstinence Education Resource Directory

1998

  • Helped local AIDS organizations establish community holiday gift programs for HIV/AIDS impacted children

1999

  • Won 3-year contract for 10 state, 30 site research project for Ryan White Title IV assessing family centered care

2000

  • Participated in CDC consultation on HIV surveillance regarding the classification problems regarding heterosexuals
  • Joined the Virginia HIV Prevention Committee

2001

  • Worked with the Bush transition team to identify issues and individuals important to the HIV/AIDS issue

2002

  • March—Traveled with Secretary Thompson to Ghana, Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana and the Ivory Coast
  • August—Led first public/private delegation to Uganda to learn more about the country’s ability to dramatically reduce its HIV infection rate
  • December—Led second public/private delegation to Uganda to learn more about the country’s ability to dramatically reduce its HIV infection rate
  • Funded the beginning of the HIV/AIDS program at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in rural Malawi

2003

  • March 20—Testified to House of Representatives Subcommittee on Health & Environment of the Committee on Energy & Commerce supporting increasing foreign assistance for HIV/AIDS
  • May 13—Co-hosted dinner honoring Uganda First Lady Janet Museveni for her leadership role in HIV/AIDS and orphan assistance
  • December—Member of US Government delegation visiting HIV sites in Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia
  • December—Opened first CAFI supported treatment clinic in Kampala, Uganda
  • December—Became a subcontractor under AIDSRelief consortium for 5-year treatment and care grant under PEPFAR

2004

  • Opened two additional treatment clinics in Kampala and Jinja, Uganda
  • Produced “What Happened in Uganda?” video featuring US and Ugandan national figures discussing
  • Uganda’s success in reducing HIV rates nationally
  • May 10—Sponsored seminar Evaluating the Role of Fixed Dose Combination treatment, Washington DC
  • December–Opened CAFI supported treatment clinics in Lusaka, Zambia and East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa

2005

  • March—Provided support for initiation of HIV treatment program at rural hospital in Choma District, Zambia
  • August—Opened two CAFI supported treatment sites in Bushenyi District, Uganda
  • September—Opened CAFI supported treatment site in Lusaka, Zambia
  • Won PEPFAR/USAID 5 year award for prevention program targeting youth ages 10-24

2006

  • June—Part of Congressional Delegation visiting treatment sites in Uganda
